Entrevista exclusiva a Kevin Hearne

¡Tengo el honor (¡¡y la emoción!!) de traeros la amable entrevista que me ha concedido Kevin Hearne en exclusiva para El desván de los sueños.

• In the first place, I would like to know more about you, the person behind the story. What can you tell us about yourself? Traducción: En primer lugar, me gustaría saber más sobre ti, la persona detrás de la historia. ¿Qué puedes decirnos de ti?

I’m a middle-aged dude with a wife and a daughter and I teach American Literature to high school students by day. By night, I write books that allow me to geek out about mythology and pop culture. I have a couple of dogs that amuse me greatly, and I like to paint miniatures from the HORDES tabletop game with my friend whenever I can find time.

Traducción: Soy un tío de mediana edad con mujer y una hija. Enseño literatura estadounidense a adolescentes en un instituto por el día. Por la noche, escribo libros que me permiten frikear sobre mitología y cultura pop. Tengo dos perros que me divierten enormemente, y me gusta pintar miniaturas del juego de mesa HORDES con mi amigo siempre que encuentro un hueco.

• And how are you in writing? How is the process for you? Do you have a routine? Traducción: ¿Cómo eres escribiendo? ¿Cómo es el proceso para ti? ¿Tienes una rutina?

I usually write after school, often with music, but sometimes without. If I’m writing a fight scene, I put on some speed metal, like DragonForce, to get myself in the mood.

Traducción: Normalmente escribo después del instituto, a menudo con música, pero a veces sin ella. Si estoy escribiendo una escena de lucha, pongo algo de metal, como el grupo DragonForce, para ponerme en situación.

• I have read you are also an English teacher, how and when did you decide to become a writer? Traducción: He leído que también eres profesor de inglés, ¿cómo y cuándo decidiste ser escritor?

I’ve wanted to be a writer since college. Once I made that decision, it took me nineteen years and a whole lot of failure before I got published. Teaching English paid the bills in the meantime and helped keep me young.

• I love Celtic mythology and I find it quite original to create a story based on some of its elements. Why did you choose this mythology? Traducción: Me encanta la mitología celta y me parece bastante original crear una historia basada en algunos de sus elementos. ¿Por qué elegiste esta mitología?

I chose it because it was a bit different from what you commonly see on the shelves. The Irish mythology in particular is wonderfully rich material, but so often you only see The Morrigan or The Wild Hunt mentioned. I wanted to delve a bit deeper than that and expose readers to more of the pantheon.

Traducción: La elegí porque era un poco diferente de lo que comúnmente se ve en las estanterías. La mitología irlandesa, en particular, está maravillosamente llena de elementos, pero a menudo solo aparecen Morrigan o la Cacería Salvaje mencionados. • In Hounded we also find some references to Nordic mythology. Will you develop it more in the next books? Traducción: En Acosado encontramos algunas referencias a la mitología nórdica. ¿La desarrollarás más en los próximos libros?

Absolutely. HAMMERED, book three, deals almost entirely with the Norse, and the consequences of Atticus’s behavior in Asgard will have far-reaching effect throughout the rest of the series. This gets hinted at in book two, HEXED, which is also the book where Spain gets a shout-out.

Traducción: Por supuesto. Hammered (libro tres) trata casi en su totalidad de los nórdicos y de las consecuencias del comportamiento de Atticus en Asgard tendrán un impacto importante a lo largo de la saga. Esto se deja entrever en el libro dos, Hexed, en el que, además, se hace alusión a España.

• I guess you needed some research on these topics, was it very difficult? How did you prepare the basic information to start with the books? Traducción: Supongo que tuviste que investigar sobre estos temas, ¿fue muy difícil? ¿Cómo preparaste el material básico para empezar los libros?

I read Irish mythology mostly for the first book—Annals of the Four Masters, the Fenian Cycle, and so on. The second required some research into World War II history (including what Spain was doing, incidentally), and the third required some examination of the Norse Eddas.
Traducción: Básicamente leí mitología irlandesa para el primer libro: Anales de los cuatro maestros, el Ciclo Feniano y demás. Para la segunda entrega tuve que investigar sobre la historia de la Segunda Guerra Mundial (incluido lo que España hizo, casualmente), y para el tercer libro leí la colección de historias de mitología nórdica Edda.

• My favorite character (apart from Atticus, obviously) is Oberon, he is just hilarious. How did you decide to add him to the story? Was he in it from the beginning? Traducción: Mi personaje favorito (a parte de Atticus, obviamente) es Oberón, me parto de risa con él. ¿Cómo decidiste incluirlo en la historia? ¿Estaba desde el principio?

He was. In fact, I began with the characters of Atticus and Oberon and built the plot around them. The heart of this series is about a man and his dog.

Traducción: Así es. De hecho, comencé con los personajes de Atticus y Oberón y construí el argumento a su alrededor. El alma de esta saga es un hombre y su perro.

• Are we getting some love in the next books? Traducción: ¿Habrá amor en los próximos libros?

There’s a lovey-dovey subplot that gets built up slowly throughout the series, but in terms of what might be called “steamy” scenes, I’m not really into writing those—probably because I’m not into reading them.

Traducción: Hay una subtrama amorosa que va construyéndose a lo largo de las series, pero lo que podríamos considerar como escenas subiditas de tono, no me gusta demasiado escribirlas... quizá porque tampoco me gusta leerlas.

• I know that usually, for the author, all the characters are important but I need to ask: is there one of them that you are especially proud of? Traducción: Sé que, normalmente, para el autor, todos los personajes son importantes pero tengo que preguntar: ¿hay alguno de ellos del que estés especialmente orgulloso?

I really enjoy the vampire Leif Helgarson; he’s fairly minor in the first book, but he grows to be much more important as the series progresses.

• I have been searching for information about your books I have found you have published three books of The Iron Druid Chronicles and the fourth one is coming in Spring. What are your future plans? Are you planning on starting a new series or continuing writing about this one? Traducción: He estado buscando información sobre tus libros y he visto que has publicado tres de la saga Las Crónicas del Druida de Hierro y el cuarto sale en primavera. ¿Cuáles son tus planes futuros? ¿Tienes pensado comenzar una nueva saga o continuarás escribiendo sobre esta?

I’m currently under contract for six books in the Iron Druid series, but I’d like to write nine. I have some other ideas percolating for down the road when I have time. There’s a possibility for an epic fantasy, or maybe a Young Adult series.

Traducción: Actualmente tengo contrato para escribir seis libros de la saga del Druida de Hierro, pero me gustaría escribir nueve. Tengo algunas ideas por ahí para desarrollarlas más adelante cuando tenga tiempo. Hay posibilidades de que escriba una fantasía épica o quizá una saga juvenil.

• I am sure Spanish fans would thrilled to have you in Spain (at least I would), do you know if you are coming on a tour, at least to Europe? Traducción: Estoy segura de que los fans españoles estarían encantados de tenerte en España (al menos yo sí), ¿sabes si harás un tour al menos por Europa?

I don’t have any immediate plans. If a publisher wants to haul me out there, of course I’d love to go, but getting there myself would be somewhat difficult. I’d love to go sooner rather than later because book six is set entirely in Europe, but the reality of the situation is I’ll probably have to wait. I would like to say I’m thrilled to be published in Spain, and from what I’ve been hearing from a few of my Latino friends, it’s an excellent translation.
