Entrevista exclusiva a Manuela Salvi

Hace unas semanas llegó a mis manos el libro Será hermoso morir juntos que trata del amor y la mafia (podéis ver la reseña aquí).
Me encantó y me apetecía tener la oportunidad de hacerle unas cuantas preguntas a la autora sobre su visión del mundo, sobre la escritura y sobre la novela. Ha sido encantadora conmigo y ha contestado amablemente la entrevista que le mandé.

• In the first place, I would like to know more about you. How would you define yourself? Traducción: En primer lugar, me gustaría saber más sobre ti. ¿Cómo te definirías?

We start with a difficult question!
I think I’m the kind of person who never grows up, so most people think I look younger, for example, and I behave as if I was 6 or 16 years old, it dipends on the situation.
For this reason the word that maybe could define me better is: change.
As children do, I like to experience new things and change my-self or my life everytime I can.

Traducción: ¡Empezamos con una pregunta difícil! Creo que soy el tipo de persona que nunca crece, así que mucha gente cree que parezco más joven, por ejemplo, y me comporto como si tuviera seis o dieciséis años, depende de la situación. Por esta razón la palabra que mejor podría definirme es "cambio".
Como les pasa a los niños, me gusta experimentar nuevas cosas y cambiarme a mí misma o mi vida siempre que puedo.

• What inspires you? Traducción: ¿Qué te inspira?

Reality. I like magic, I’m an Harry Potter fan, but I find reality more surprising in some way. I like to observe people on the trains or in the streets and to take notes. I like to imagine the adults I meet how they were in their childhood. I really would like to be a mind-reader, because I think that in every mind there’s an hidden universe to discover.

Traducción: La realidad. Me gusta la magia: soy fan de Harry Potter, pero encuentro que la realidad es más sorprendente en cierta manera. Me gusta observar a la gente en el tren o en la calle y tomar notas. Me gusta imaginar cómo eran los adultos que conozco durante su infancia. Me encantaría poder leer las mentes porque creo que dentro de cada mente hay un universo escondido por descubrir.

• For you, what does it mean to be a writer? What does it give you? How does it make you feel? Traducción: Para ti, ¿qué significa ser escritora? ¿Qué te aporta? ¿Cómo te hace sentir?
  

Writing is my life. It has ever been. Writing gives to the writer a precious gift: the chance to live other people’s lives. That’s what I like most of my job, I can be whoever I want, at least on the paper.

Traducción: Escribir es mi vida. Siempre lo ha sido. Escribir le otorga al escritor un valioso don: la oportunidad de vivir las vidas de otras personas. Eso es lo que más me gusta de mi trabajo puedo ser quien quiera se, al menos en el papel.

• I love the message you send at the end of the book about the mafia and the destroyed lives around it, do you think it is a big problem in Italy (or in some parts of Italy)? Traducción: Me encanta el mensaje que envías al final del libro sobre la mafia y las vidas destrozadas que deja alrededor, ¿crees que es un problema importante en Italia (o en algunas partes de Italia?

Well, I think it’s the main problem here. There are a lot of talks about the credit crunch all around the world but I think in Italy there’s a different kind of situation, because there can’t be hope for us if we don’t believe in Law as a tool to build a better Country.
Many people think that the mafia is a problem of Southern Italy and this is another big mistake. The mafia is everywhere. It’s expecially in our lifestyle. And if you read Saviano’s “Gomorra” you’ll find that it’s now also in Spain, for example, or in Germany, in UK… Think about it as a cancer.
My Country is dying because of it.

Traducción: Bueno, creo que es el principal problema aquí. Hay un montón de debates sobre la restricción crediticia en todo el mundo pero creo que en Italia tenemos una situación diferente, porque no puede haber esperanza para nosotros si no creemos que las leyes son la herramienta para construir un país mejor. Mucha gente puede pensar que la mafia es un problema del sur de Italia y eso es otro gran error. La mafia está por todas partes. Está metido en nuestra forma de vida. Y si leéis Gomorra de Saviano, veréis que también está en España, por ejemplo, o en Alemania, en Reino Unido... Pensad en ello como un cáncer.
Mi país se muere a causa de ella.

• Is there any event or character based on reality? Traducción: ¿Hay algún suceso o personaje basado en la realidad?

There are a lot of little signs of my personal experience in the book. For example, when I was in high school, the daughter of a literature teacher started to go out with the nephew of the mafia boss I talk about in my note at the end of the book. She was in love with him and I was shocked. And then I thought: he’s a person anyway.
Another example, the apartment where Bianca and her father live does really exists… it’s m friend Luca’s flat. The street, the fish market, the city: everything is real. If you go to my Facebook profile, you can see some pictures. I like to transform reality in literature (and vice versa, sometimes…)

Traducción: Hay un montón de pequeños detalles de mi experiencia personal en el libro. Por ejemplo, cuando iba al instituto, la hija de mi profesor de literatura comenzó a salir con el sobrino del jefe de la mafia del que hablo en la nota al final de la novela. Estaba enamorada de él y yo estaba alucinada. Y entonces pensé: él es una persona de todas formas.
Otro ejemplo, el piso en el que viven Bianca y su padre existe de verdad. Es el piso de mi amigo Luca. La calle, el mercado de pescado, la ciudad: todo es real. Si vais a mi perfil de Facebook, podéis ver algunas fotos (link directo a las imágenes). Me gusta transformar la realidad en literatura (y viceversa, a veces...)

• As far as I know, I think Será hermoso morir juntos is the only book you’ve published in Spain, do you have more Young Adult/romance books? Could you tell us about them? Traducción: Por lo que sé, creo que Será hermoso morir juntos es el único libro que has publicado en España, ¿tienes más novelas románticas juveniles?
  

I’ve published two YA books lately. But only in Italy, I’m afraid.
One is about Aleksandra, a girl who starts to sell her body in order to please her boyfriend… it’s a strong, beautiful story about acting/being ourselves. If you visit the website www.nemmeno1bacio.it you’ll find a chapter to read (only Italian, I’m sorry) and six free-download amazing songs included in the story (one of the characters is a musician). There’s also a booktrailer to watch.
The second book is the story of Picabo, a girl who lives in a future where people have no future. She has a magic camera that shows her past and future and with it she will find the truth about her world and how it ended so bad. It’s a fantasy/science fiction story I’ve really loved to write.

Traducción: He publicado dos libros juveniles últimamente. Pero me temo que solo en Italia.
Uno trata de Alexsandra, una chica que empieza a vender su cuerpo para complacer a su novio. Es una historia preciosa y llena de fueza que trata sobre actuar o ser nosotros mismos. Si visitáis la página web www.nemmeno1bacio.it encontraréis un capítulo para leer (solo en italiano, lo siento) y seis increíbles canciones para descargar gratuitamente incluidas en la historia (uno de los personajes es un músico). También está el booktrailer.
El segundo libro es la historia de Picabo, una chica que vive en un futuro en el que la gente no tiene futuro. Tiene una cámara mágica que le muestra el pasado y el futuro y con la que encontrará la verdad sobre su mundo y sobre cómo terminó tan mal. Es una historia de fantasía/ciencia ficción que me encantó escribir.

• If you were Bianca at the end of the book, would you have made the same decision or would you have let it go? Traducción: Si fueras Bianca, al final del libro, ¿habrías tomado la misma decisión o lo habrías dejado pasar?

I would have made the same decision, definitely. I really believe that great dreams lead to great sacrifices. If you want something really bad, you have to be prepared to fight. I also think that 18 years of age is the right time to face responsabilities and to make choices. Adults like to believe that teenagers are not able to cope. On the contrary, I think teenagers should live their lives and pay… the bills!
Otherwise the risk is that life could start too late.

Habría tomado la misma decisión, sin duda. Creo firmemente que los grandes sueños conllevan grandes sacrificios. Si quieres algo con todas tus fuerzas, tienes que estar dispuesta a luchar. También pienso que los 18 años es la edad perfecta para enfrentarse a las responsabilidades y hacer elecciones. A los adultos les gusta creer que los adolescentes no son capaces de arreglárselas. Al contrario, ¡creo que los adolescentes deberían vivir sus vidas y pagar las facturas!
Sino, el riesgo es que la vida podría empezar demasiado tarde.

• For those who have not read the book yet, what do you want to express with it? What is its ultimate meaning? Traducción: Para aquellos que aún no hayan leído el libro, ¿qué quieres expresar con él? ¿Cuál es su significado más profundo?

The main point is: shape your life as your heart desires.
And: don’t stop to the surface of things. Go deep. Search. Fight the thing you think is your doom, as Manuel does in the book.
And last: find new ways, if you can.

Traducción: Lo principa es: dale forma a tu vida según los deseos de tu corazón.
Y: no te detengas en la superficie de las cosas. Profundiza. Busca. Lucha por lo que crees que es tu destino, como Manuel hace en el libro.
Y por último: encuentra nuevos caminos, si puedes.

• Have you thought about a second part for Será hermoso morir juntos? I would love to read more! Traducción: ¿Has pensado en una segunda parte para Será hermoso morir juntos? ¡Me encantaría leer más!

SPOILERS Actually, I have not… It’s not a story thought for a series.
But then I can to throw back the question to the readers… how would you imagine Manuel and Bianca’s new life?

• And last, but not least, what are your publishing projects in the near future? Are you preparing a novel or something? Traducción: Y por último, ¿qué planeas publicar en el futuro cercano? ¿Estás preparando alguna novela o algo?

I’m going to move in London soon, actually. My next challenge will be to write in English and to find… new ways.
I’m also writing some novels for younger readers and I’m not sure about when I will write for YA again, but I would like it to be soon. I have some ideas ready to be put on paper…
